The Raven Cycle, by Maggie Steifvater

🏆Top 5 Books of 2018: 4th Place🏆

A 4 book series for 4th place. It’s hard to explain the marginally ridiculous and winding plot of these books, but the plot is not what’s important – these books are widely adored because of the characters.

The Raven Cycle follows a girl called Blue, who comes from a family of psychics but has no psychic powers herself. She falls in with a group of boys from the local private school who are hunting for a centuries-dead Welsh king said to be interred in their town of Henrietta, Virginia, USA.

The ensemble cast of 5 and their friendship dynamics are just incredible; I don’t read a lot of YA but the way the author handles their relationships is stunning, and each of them is drawn with a depth and sensitivity that’s something really special. With these characters, the supernatural plot makes perfect sense, and the setting feels so real and vivid it’s like you’re there alongside them.

Sensitive, hilarious and moving, this really is a wonderful series of books. The ending lacks the punch I was expecting, but honestly, the ride was so incredibly enjoyable that I don’t care at all. I couldn’t put these down, and can’t wait to re-read them, which is really saying something.
